Customs duty and VAT
From 1 July 2026, a Customs Duty of €3 applies for each item in a parcel of goods valued at €150 or less that were bought from outside the EU. Identical items count as one item: two identical pens are one item, while a pen, a notebook and a key ring are three.

Revenue's own example is a parcel of three different items: €9 Customs Duty, plus Value-Added Tax (VAT).

Import VAT is payable on all goods arriving into Ireland from outside the EU, no matter how small the purchase.

Who collects the charges, and when
Some sellers collect the duty at checkout, and then the total is final. Otherwise the postal service or courier will require you to pay the €3 duty per item before your goods can be delivered.

Where a retailer's price does not include these charges, you will be required to pay them to the postal service or courier before your goods are released. If a website states that taxes and duties are included, no further charges should arise on delivery.

The €3 Customs Duty is not refunded if you return an item, unless the goods are faulty. Whether the VAT is refunded depends on the seller.
